Metals in Mixed Groups by Meghan Gallup, Emily Prey
Metal in mixed groups is all the purple squares except Sb and Po
The metals in this group are
Gallium
Aluminium
Indium
Thalium
Tin
Lead
Bismuth
They are in the groups 13, 14 and 15, and the periods they are in are 3, 4, 5, and 6. They are all solids.
Gallium
Physical Properties
All of these metals are silver or silvery- white and have a metallic luster.
Almost all of these metals are soft and moldable except bismuth, which is hard and brittle.
These metals have a high melting point.
All the metals have a relatively high density.
Chemical Properties
A few of these metals tarnish when exposed to air, such as thalium and lead.
Most of these metals are good conductors of heat and electricity, except for lead.
These metals do not react to chemicals as much as other metals on the periodic table.
Interesting Facts
Tin has been known for thousands of years. References to tin can be found in the Bible and the sacred Hindu book Rig Veda.
Up until the 1960's, lead was used to make many things, including paint, food wrappings and pipes. Now that scientists have discovered some of the health risks lead has, it is not being used as much.
Gallium is one of four elements on the periodic table that can exist in liquid form at room temperature.
Common Uses
Aluminum is often used for food wrapping and cans.
Bismuth is sometimes used in electrical fuses ad automatic fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Tin is mostly used as a protective coating over other metals because it is expensive and not very strong.
